“THIS IS THE YEAR”
We have all had a year, or a few, that we have said that…
This will be the year you find your dream job, you finally save up for a new car, you get in the best shape of your life… the New Year’s resolution list can go on and on. But how many of you have found that come February or March, those resolutions are fading, and by summer they’re totally forgotten?
2018 is just days away, and we want to share a few tips for New Year’s resolution success:
1: Be Realistic
There are good goals and then there are far-fetched ones… When it comes to setting your resolutions this year, pick ones that are within your reach. Now we’re not saying to underestimate yourself by any means. But setting an attainable goal will set you up for success in 2018!
2: Write it Down
Don’t just keep your goals in your head! Write them on paper first… plan them out! Some of us work well with a structured plan, while others like to draw them out. Writing it down in a safe space is also a good way to measure progress. Keep a journal and update it regularly with any changes in your goal and the steps you have made to get there. Proof of progress is some of the best motivation out there!
3: Make Visual Reminders
Now that you have your goal written down – make some visual reminders for yourself. These visual cues could be something like hanging your skinny jeans next to your mirror or placing a happy picture of yourself on your desk at work. Keep these items in places that you will see them daily – your office, bathroom, kitchen, or bedroom.
4: Make Sure it’s Measurable
If you can’t measure something, you can’t track its progress. Plain and simple. Make minor checkpoints for yourself and reference your goal journal we mentioned earlier. Like we said, proof of progress and crossing mini milestones are huge motivation boosters.
5: Make an Investment
Nothing says “I’m committing to my fitness resolutions” like buying a personal training package. Don’t just join a gym. Buy the new athletic clothes and hire the trainer! Making an investment is an easy way to stick to your goals – because you’ve put money out for it and there’s no skipping that scheduled training session!
6: Prioritize the Goal
If you embarking on a new goal – it is incredibly important to schedule time to work on it – just as you would a meeting with your boss. For instance, if your goal is to run a 5K in March, you need to set aside time each day for running. Wake up 30 minutes earlier, stay up 30 minutes later, take a shorter lunch break, skip Wednesday happy hours, pack your gym clothes and bring them to work… these are all ways to prioritize your goals and set you up for New Year’s resolution success!
7: Get Others Involved
Support can make all the difference. Not only can you make new friends and find a great support system – but also it creates a unique sense of accountability. You are much more likely to show up and stick to your goals if you’ve told someone else about them or they’re waiting for you.
8: Focus on One Step at a Time
We cannot emphasize this point enough! Like we said earlier, mini milestones are incredibly important. If your goal is to lose 20 pounds, that first 5 is equally as important as the end result. By tracking your progress you will gain the confidence to stay on course. And don’t forget to reward yourself for these mini-goals! We’ve had some patients who put $10 dollars in a jar for every pound they lose.
